Law enforcement authorities have identified Cole Tomas Allen as the man arrested following a shooting incident at the White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington, D.C.

The 31-year-old suspect, who is from Torrance, California, was apprehended by security agents inside the Washington Hilton hotel after gunshots were reported during the high-profile event attended by journalists, government officials, and public figures.

According to officials, Allen allegedly expressed intentions to target members of the administration of Donald Trump. While authorities say the motive remains under investigation, preliminary findings suggest the suspect may have been aiming at senior government officials, potentially including the president.

Speaking in a televised interview, acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed that investigators are examining multiple aspects of the incident, including reports that the suspect may have assembled his weapon within the hotel premises.

Security agencies disclosed that the suspect was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and several knives at the time of the incident. Witness accounts and preliminary reports indicate that multiple gunshots were fired, with security personnel engaging the suspect before he could advance further into restricted areas.

Washington’s interim police chief stated that the suspect appeared to be acting alone and was quickly subdued. He was not injured during the exchange but was taken to a hospital for evaluation following his arrest.

Investigators also revealed that Allen had travelled across several states before arriving in Washington, raising additional concerns about premeditation and planning.

In the aftermath of the incident, President Trump described the suspect as someone who had harboured “a lot of hatred,” adding that authorities had recovered materials suggesting ideological motivations.

The incident has heightened security concerns around major political and media gatherings in the United States, with officials expected to review existing protocols to prevent similar breaches in the future.

Authorities say the investigation is ongoing, with further details expected as forensic and intelligence assessments continue
