Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on Bola Tinubu to order the immediate withdrawal of a recent directive issued by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), describing it as unlawful and a threat to press freedom.
In a letter dated April 18, 2026, signed by its Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation urged the President to direct the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, and the NBC to reverse the notice.
SERAP said the directive represents “a dangerous attempt to impose prior censorship on the media and suppress legitimate journalistic expression,” urging the government to allow journalists and broadcast stations to operate freely in line with constitutional provisions.
The group also asked authorities to refrain from imposing restrictions that could limit broadcasters from expressing opinions, engaging guests, or conducting critical analysis, noting that such actions are protected under both Nigerian law and international human rights standards.
The demand follows a notice issued by the NBC on April 17, 2026, citing increased violations of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code and warning stations against airing personal opinions, intimidating guests, or failing to maintain neutrality.
However, SERAP argued that the provisions cited by the regulator are vague and unconstitutional, stressing that the right to hold and express opinions remains protected.
“Journalistic opinion is protected expression,” the organisation said, adding that attempts to restrict commentary and analysis amount to prior restraint, which undermines democratic discourse.
The group further warned that broad and unclear rules could lead to arbitrary enforcement and create a chilling effect on journalists, particularly as the 2027 general elections approach.
SERAP also threatened legal action if the directive is not withdrawn within 48 hours, stating that it would pursue all necessary steps to ensure compliance.
In addition, the organisation called on the NBC to review and amend sections of the Broadcasting Code to align with constitutional guarantees and international human rights obligations.
