The Rivers State Government has suspended Wisdom Gate International School, located in Eligbolo, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, following the death of a two-year-old pupil, Wynne Akekue.
The toddler reportedly died after a bookshelf fell on her while she was asleep in her classroom on March 17, 2026. Her parents, Dr Iasuaka Akekue and Mrs Chinyerum Akekue, had earlier demanded justice, accusing the school management of concealing details surrounding the incident.
In response, the school denied the allegations, stating that it has been cooperating with authorities, including the police, in the ongoing investigation.
Announcing the suspension, the State Commissioner for Education, Peters Nwagor, said the decision followed an independent investigation by the ministry and engagement with the school’s management.
He added that the school would remain closed until all issues related to the incident are fully resolved, while expressing sympathy to the bereaved family and urging the public to avoid speculation.
The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safety standards and quality assurance across schools in the state.
