Real Madrid saw their already slim chances of clinching the La Liga title dealt another significant blow after conceding a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Real Betis.

The result leaves Madrid eight points behind league leaders FC Barcelona with just five matches left in the season, further dimming their hopes of a late title push.

Madrid took an early lead in the 17th minute through Vinícius Júnior, who reacted quickest after Federico Valverde’s long-range effort was parried by Betis goalkeeper Álvaro Valles. The Brazilian forward calmly slotted home from close range to give the visitors control of the match.

Despite their early advantage, Madrid failed to capitalise on several chances to extend their lead. Kylian Mbappé had a goal ruled out for offside and missed another opportunity, while Jude Bellingham and Vinícius were also unable to convert promising openings.

Betis gradually grew into the contest and tested Madrid’s defence, only to be repeatedly denied by goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, who produced a series of crucial saves to keep his side ahead.

However, Madrid’s resistance was finally broken deep into stoppage time. Defensive confusion allowed Héctor Bellerín to seize on a loose ball inside the penalty area after Ferland Mendy lost possession. The former Arsenal defender fired a low shot past Lunin in the 93rd minute to salvage a point for the hosts.

The late setback compounds a difficult campaign for Madrid, who are also out of the UEFA Champions League and now face the prospect of finishing the season without silverware — a rare occurrence for the club.

Having briefly reduced Barcelona’s lead earlier in the week with a win over Alavés, Madrid’s inability to secure all three points once again has proven costly. Their fifth draw of the season underscores ongoing issues with consistency at a critical stage.

Attention now turns to upcoming fixtures, including a decisive El Clásico clash against Barcelona, where Madrid must secure victory while hoping their rivals drop points elsewhere to keep their fading title hopes alive.
