The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has uncovered and successfully neutralised explosive devices at the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre, averting what authorities described as a potential tragedy.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Timfon John, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday in Uyo, noting that the operation followed credible intelligence from correctional authorities about suspicious items within the facility.
According to her, the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, immediately ordered the deployment of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, BomPol Base 38, alongside other tactical teams to secure the area.
A coordinated search operation led to the recovery of two 90mm high explosive rounds and a 45cm burning fuse, as well as tools including pincers, a screwdriver, iron chisels, and a conduit pipe.
“The EOD team professionally rendered the explosive devices safe, thereby neutralising any imminent threat and preventing possible loss of lives and destruction of critical infrastructure,” John said.
She added that security around the custodial centre has since been reinforced, with increased surveillance, tighter access control, and continuous patrols to deter further threats.
The police spokesperson also revealed that investigations are ongoing to determine the origin of the explosives and apprehend those responsible.
Authorities confirmed that no casualties were recorded during the operation.
Residents were urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, as the command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Akwa Ibom State.
