Authorities in South Africa have arrested prominent pan-African activist Kemi Seba, who is wanted in Benin over allegations of inciting rebellion following his reported support for a failed coup attempt in December.

Seba, born Stellio Gilles Robert Capo Chichi, has built a reputation as a fierce critic of France and African governments perceived to maintain close ties with Paris. His outspoken stance has made him both influential and controversial across the continent.

According to South African police, Seba was apprehended on Monday at a shopping mall in Pretoria, alongside his 18-year-old son. Authorities also arrested a third individual accused of being paid to facilitate their illegal entry into Zimbabwe, from where they allegedly planned to travel onward to Europe.

The trio appeared briefly in court, facing charges including conspiracy to commit a crime and violations of South Africa’s immigration laws. Law enforcement officials revealed that preliminary investigations suggest Seba is considered a fugitive in both France and Benin, linked to alleged offenses against state authorities.

The case has been adjourned until April 20, with all three suspects remaining in custody as legal proceedings continue and extradition processes begin to unfold.
