The Nigerian Navy has recorded an overwhelming public response to its “citizens’ sail” initiative, with over 11,000 Nigerians applying for the opportunity to sail aboard a naval warship.

This was disclosed by the Director of Naval Information, Abi Folorunso, in a statement shared via his official social media platform on Friday.

Unexpected Public Interest

Reacting to the surge in applications, Folorunso admitted that the turnout exceeded expectations, reflecting strong public enthusiasm for the programme.

“So far, over 11,000 persons have applied to sail on a Nigerian Navy warship. I must confess that I didn’t expect this number of persons,” he said.

Limited Capacity Challenge

Despite the high level of interest, the Navy acknowledged that it would not be able to accommodate all applicants due to limited onboard capacity.

“Challenge is we cannot get over 11,000 people onboard the limited space on the designated ships,” Folorunso added.

Selection Process and Timeline

The Navy announced that successful applicants will be revealed between May 1 and May 3, 2026, urging participants to check official platforms for updates.

Applicants have been advised to monitor the Navy’s verified communication channels for the final list and further instructions.

About the Initiative

The “citizens’ sail” programme was introduced earlier in April as part of activities marking the Navy’s annual celebration, commonly known as Navy Week.

The initiative is designed to provide civilians with rare onboard access to naval platforms, while promoting transparency and strengthening civil-military relations.

Promoting Engagement and Awareness

According to the Navy, the programme is a relatively new addition to its outreach efforts, aimed at showcasing its operational capabilities and fostering greater public understanding of maritime security operations.

Other Navy Week activities typically include ship tours, ceremonial parades, medical outreach programmes, and community engagement events across coastal regions.

Eligibility and Safety Measures

The Navy emphasised that participation is subject to strict screening procedures, including identity verification and compliance with safety protocols, given the sensitive nature of naval operations.

Selected participants will be required to adhere to all onboard regulations throughout the experience.

Strengthening Civil-Military Relations

The strong public response underscores growing interest in the activities of the Nigerian Navy and highlights the importance of initiatives that bridge the gap between the military and civilians.

Observers note that such programmes can play a key role in building trust, enhancing transparency, and encouraging public support for national security institutions.
