Lebanon Conflict Escalates as War Returns Amid Fragile Ceasefire

With Lebanon once again engulfed in conflict, renewed fighting between Israel and the Iran-backed group Hezbollah has deepened fears that the country’s fragile stability is collapsing.

The renewed escalation comes months after a brief ceasefire brokered in November 2024, which had temporarily halted a devastating war between both sides. However, the agreement did little to end hostilities completely, with near-daily strikes and border tensions continuing in several parts of the country.

President Aoun’s Reform and Security Push

Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun, a former army chief, assumed office following the previous war and pledged to address one of the country’s most divisive security issues—the disarmament of Hezbollah.

Aoun has previously stated that disarmament “cannot be done by force,” but remains committed to reducing tensions and restoring state authority across Lebanese territory.

During a meeting at the Baabda Palace overlooking Beirut, he expressed cautious optimism about the country’s future, despite the deep-rooted political and military divisions.

“I was born an optimist,” he said at the time.

Deep Divisions Over Hezbollah

Hezbollah remains a central and controversial force in Lebanese politics and security.

Supporters view the group as a critical defence against Israeli aggression, while critics accuse it of acting in the interests of its Iranian backers and dragging Lebanon into repeated conflicts.

The divide has left Lebanon politically fractured and vulnerable to repeated cycles of violence.

Continued Cross-Border Escalation

Tensions intensified further following reports of the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei during strikes in the region earlier in the year, an incident that triggered rocket fire from Hezbollah into Israel.

Israel responded with air strikes and renewed ground operations in southern Lebanon, further escalating the conflict and causing widespread destruction.

In one of the deadliest recent waves of attacks, Israeli airstrikes reportedly killed more than 300 people in a single day, according to local accounts.

Diplomatic Efforts and Uncertain Outlook

President Aoun has proposed direct negotiations with Israel in an effort to end the violence—an unprecedented step given that both countries do not maintain formal diplomatic relations.

However, progress has been limited, with mediation efforts complicated by broader regional tensions and shifting international dynamics.

Despite renewed diplomatic outreach, the situation on the ground remains volatile, with ongoing airstrikes and displacement continuing to affect civilians across Lebanon.
