Lagos-born basketball player Blessing Adebanjo has reflected on her journey from helping her mother at a market stall in Nigeria to competing in the United States college basketball system, as she prepares for the next phase of her career through the NCAA transfer portal.
In an interview with Ball Chat With Kenny, Adebanjo spoke about how basketball unexpectedly found its way into her life while growing up in Lagos.
According to her, the sport came through an encounter with a coach who often visited the market where she assisted her mother after school.
“It was a blessing. I grew up in Lagos and honestly basketball just found me,” she said.
Adebanjo recalled that a coach named Charles frequently visited the market with his players and repeatedly encouraged her mother to allow her try basketball instead of spending all her time helping at the shop.
“One faithful day, I went to the stadium, sat down and watched some guys play. I loved it immediately,” she said.
She soon registered to start training, and her development happened quickly thanks to the support of several coaches and players who helped her improve.
What started as a casual interest soon turned into a serious pursuit, as Adebanjo realised she had the potential to succeed in the sport.
Her early career in Nigeria saw her play for teams such as Deep Waters Basketball Club, MFM Basketball Club and First Bank Basketball Club before earning the opportunity to continue her basketball journey in Japan.
