An image showing an Israeli soldier allegedly striking a statue of Jesus with a sledgehammer in southern Lebanon has triggered widespread backlash after circulating online.

The incident reportedly took place near the village of Debel, an area where some residents have remained despite ongoing tensions between Israel and the armed group Hezbollah.

Reacting to the development, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was “stunned and saddened,” while Foreign Minister Gideon Saar issued an apology, acknowledging the offence caused to Christians.

Local religious leaders strongly condemned the act. Father Fadi Flaifel, head of the Debel congregation, described it as a desecration of a sacred symbol, stressing that such actions go against fundamental human rights and religious respect.

The Israel Defense Forces confirmed the authenticity of the image and stated that the soldier’s actions were inconsistent with its values. The military said it is treating the matter seriously and promised disciplinary measures, while also working with the Christian community to restore the damaged statue.

The controversy comes amid a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah following weeks of fighting in southern Lebanon. Although the truce has reduced hostilities, both sides have accused each other of violations.

International reactions have also followed, with US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee calling for “swift, severe, and public consequences.” Several American political figures also condemned the act, reflecting growing scrutiny of Israel’s actions among segments of the US public.

The incident has further highlighted tensions in the region, particularly regarding the protection of religious symbols and cultural heritage during ongoing conflicts.
