At least six people have been killed and several others injured after a gunman opened fire in Kyiv on Saturday, according to Ukrainian authorities.
The attack occurred in the southern Holosiivskyi district, where the suspect—identified as a local resident—began shooting at civilians on the street before moving into a nearby supermarket and taking hostages.
Ukraine’s Interior Minister, Ihor Klymenko, said security forces responded swiftly, engaging the attacker in a tense standoff that lasted about 40 minutes. Police negotiators attempted to de-escalate the situation, but the gunman reportedly acted erratically and made no clear demands.
President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that 14 people were injured in the incident, including a 12-year-old boy. Four victims were killed at the scene, while another woman later died in hospital. The attacker also killed one of the hostages during the siege.
Authorities said officers were prepared to provide medical aid to injured victims inside the supermarket, but the suspect refused to cooperate. Following the killing of a hostage, security forces were ordered to neutralise him.
The gunman was eventually shot dead during a confrontation with police inside the supermarket. His motive remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The incident has sent shockwaves across the city, raising fresh concerns about public safety amid ongoing national tensions.
