Gabon Opposition Leader Bilie-By-Nze Arrested in Controversial Crackdown

Authorities in Gabon have arrested prominent opposition leader Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze, a vocal critic of the current government, in a move that has ignited political controversy.

According to his political group, Together For Gabon (EPG), Bilie-By-Nze was detained late Wednesday at his residence under what they described as “arbitrary and brutal” circumstances that violate fundamental principles of the rule of law.

The party linked the arrest to an incident dating back to 2008, when Bilie-By-Nze chaired the organizing committee of a national cultural event. The case reportedly centers on an unresolved financial dispute, with allegations that the Gabonese government failed to settle debts related to the Festival of Cultures.

Condemning the arrest, EPG described it as a “serious political manoeuvre” aimed at silencing one of the country’s most influential dissenting voices.

Bilie-By-Nze is no stranger to Gabon’s political landscape. He previously held several key government roles under former president Ali Bongo, including serving as prime minister from January to August 2023 before a military coup removed Bongo from power.

He later emerged as a major opposition contender, finishing as runner-up in the most recent presidential election behind Brice Oligui Nguema, who secured a decisive victory with more than 94% of the vote.

In recent months, Bilie-By-Nze has openly challenged several government actions, including the suspension of social media platforms introduced in February and sweeping nationality law reforms enacted by decree. These measures came amid rising public unrest, including protests and a teachers’ strike that have tested the stability of Gabon’s new administration.

His arrest now adds another layer of tension to an already fragile political climate, raising fresh concerns about freedom of expression and the future of opposition politics in the country.
