A tragic mass shooting in Shreveport has left eight children dead after a father opened fire during what authorities described as a domestic disturbance.

Police said the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday when the suspect, identified as Shamar Elkins, began shooting around 5:00 a.m. The victims, aged between one and 14 years, included seven of his own children and one unrelated child.

According to the Shreveport Police Department, the gunman first shot a woman on the street before moving to a nearby residence, where he carried out the deadly attack. One of the victims managed to flee and alert authorities, while another child reportedly jumped from the roof and survived with injuries.

Two adult women, including the children’s mother, were critically injured and are receiving treatment in hospital.

Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene in a stolen vehicle, prompting a police chase into a neighbouring area. Officers eventually confronted and fatally shot him, bringing the incident to an end.

Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux described the घटना as one of the worst tragedies in the city’s history, expressing deep sorrow for the affected families and the wider community.

Authorities said investigations are ongoing, with support from Louisiana State Police and other agencies to determine the full circumstances surrounding the attack.

The incident is being regarded as one of the deadliest mass shootings in the United States in recent years, highlighting ongoing concerns about domestic violence and gun-related crimes.
