The spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force in Delta State, Bright Edafe, has stirred fresh controversy after suggesting that “spirituality may not be far” from the actions of an officer captured in a viral video killing a suspect.
Edafe made the remark during a live interview on Channels Television on Wednesday, as he addressed public outrage over the incident, widely condemned as an extrajudicial execution.
The shooting reportedly occurred on April 26, 2026, when operatives attached to the Area Command in Effurun responded to intelligence from members of the public. The suspect, identified as Mene Ogidi, was said to have been apprehended while attempting to waybill a parcel allegedly containing a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.
According to the police, the situation took a tragic turn when the team leader, Nuhu Usman, opened fire on the suspect—an action described by authorities as a clear violation of Force Order 237 and the operational guidelines of the police.
‘No explanation’ — Police struggle to justify action
Reacting to the development, Edafe admitted that the command has been unable to provide a clear explanation for the officer’s conduct.
“In my six years in public relations, this is my most difficult moment. Having an incident that cannot be explained is very troubling,” he said.
He added that while the police cannot officially attribute the act to supernatural causes, the bizarre nature of the incident leaves room for speculation.
“Police cannot attribute the problem to spirituality, but that may not be far from it. That is the only explanation one can give to what he did,” Edafe stated.
Officer detained as investigations continue
The incident, which has sparked widespread condemnation across social media and civil society groups, has prompted swift internal action. The officer involved has been arrested and transferred to Abuja for further investigation and disciplinary proceedings.
Authorities have reiterated that the Nigeria Police Force does not condone extrajudicial killings and has assured the public that due process will be followed.
Public outrage and calls for accountability
The viral footage has intensified calls for transparency and accountability, with rights groups and legal experts demanding an open trial and stricter enforcement of rules governing the use of force by police personnel.
For many observers, the case underscores long-standing concerns about police conduct, use of force, and the need for institutional reforms within the system.
As investigations continue, the focus remains on ensuring justice for the victim and restoring public confidence in law enforcement.
