Defence Intelligence College Launches Course to Tackle Rising Terrorist Ambushes

The Defence Intelligence College (DIC) has launched a specialised Counter-Ambush Intelligence and Movement Security Course in response to the increasing wave of terrorist ambushes targeting military operations across Nigeria.

The training, organised in collaboration with Renown Consult Limited, brought together personnel from the military, intelligence, and other security agencies to strengthen their capacity to detect, prevent, and respond to ambush attacks.

Focus on Intelligence-Led Security

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Emmanuel Undiandeye, emphasised the critical role of intelligence in safeguarding national security.

Represented by Air Vice Marshal Bala Rabiu Mamman, he noted that intelligence remains the backbone of effective military operations, helping troops anticipate threats, make informed decisions, and protect national interests.

Rising Security Threats

Undiandeye highlighted that Nigeria continues to face complex and evolving security challenges, including insurgency, banditry, terrorism, kidnapping, and organised crime.

He warned that ambushes have become one of the most dangerous tactics used by criminal groups, often carefully planned to exploit intelligence gaps, predictable movement patterns, and coordination lapses.

“The frequency of ambush incidents targeting operational bases, convoys, patrol teams, and logistics movements is a matter of serious concern,” he said.

Strengthening Response and Prevention

The course is designed to focus on intelligence-driven detection, route analysis, convoy protection, and coordinated response strategies.

According to the intelligence chief, the programme aims to enhance prevention, improve inter-agency collaboration, and build resilience among security personnel operating in high-risk environments.

Call for Professionalism

Participants were urged to approach the training with discipline and commitment, while upholding professionalism, leadership, and ethical conduct.

Undiandeye stressed that public trust remains a vital asset, noting that personnel must demonstrate integrity and accountability in both operations and conduct.

Building Capacity for Modern Threats

He added that attendees are expected to serve as “force multipliers,” applying the knowledge gained to improve operational outcomes within their respective organisations.

The initiative reflects ongoing efforts to adapt Nigeria’s security architecture to evolving threats and strengthen the effectiveness of counter-terrorism operations.
