King Charles III is set to deliver a landmark address to the US Congress on Tuesday, where he is expected to emphasise unity between the United Kingdom and the United States despite current diplomatic tensions.
In the speech, the King will stress that “time and again, our two countries have always found ways to come together,” highlighting the enduring strength of the transatlantic alliance.
The address comes at a sensitive time in relations between both countries, with Donald Trump criticising Keir Starmer over his handling of the ongoing Iran war.
Security across Washington, DC has been heightened following a recent shooting incident at an event attended by the US president. The monarch is expected to express sympathy over the attack during his remarks.
Accompanied by Queen Camilla, the visit marks the first state trip to the US by a British monarch since Queen Elizabeth II in 2007.
According to royal sources, King Charles will call for “reconciliation and renewal” in the UK–US relationship and underline the importance of defending shared democratic values such as tolerance, liberty, and equality.
He is also expected to urge continued cooperation in addressing global challenges, including support for NATO and efforts to protect Ukraine.
The King will describe the transatlantic partnership as one built on compassion, mutual understanding, and a commitment to peace across diverse cultures and beliefs.
The speech, expected to last about 20 minutes, forms the centrepiece of a four-day state visit that began with the royal couple’s arrival at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, where they were received by US officials including Monica Crowley and British Ambassador Sir Christian Turner.
The visit is seen as a key diplomatic effort to reinforce ties between the long-standing allies amid evolving global tensions.
