Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal endured a dramatic night at the Camp Nou as he scored the decisive penalty in a narrow victory over Celta Vigo, but immediately picked up an injury that could sideline him for weeks.

The 18-year-old confidently converted from the spot in the 40th minute, sending goalkeeper Ionut Radu the wrong way after he was fouled in the box by Yoel Lago following a skilful run into the area.

However, celebrations quickly turned into concern as Yamal signalled discomfort moments after scoring. The youngster went down clutching his left hamstring, immediately alerting Barcelona’s medical team.

He was treated on the pitch before limping off slowly with the assistance of club doctors, heading straight down the tunnel and being replaced by Roony Bardghji.

Injury Concerns for Club and Country

The injury is a major concern for Barcelona, who are now nine points clear at the top of La Liga with six matches remaining as they edge closer to retaining the title.

It also raises alarm for Spain, with less than 50 days until the World Cup, where Yamal is expected to play a key role after an outstanding season.

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick admitted uncertainty over the severity of the injury after the match.

“We have to wait. We have to see what it is. I think there’s something, because he felt it and after the goal he would not leave the pitch without a reason. Hopefully, it’s not so bad,” Flick said.

Barcelona and Spain Hold Their Breath

Yamal has been one of Barcelona’s standout performers this season, registering 16 goals and 11 assists in La Liga, and playing a crucial role in their title charge.

His rapid rise has also translated to international success, as he was named Young Player of the Tournament at Euro 2024, where Spain lifted the trophy.

Barcelona midfielder Pedri also expressed concern, urging calm while awaiting medical results.

“I hope it is for as few weeks as possible. He’ll be tested and we’ll see what it is,” Pedri told Movistar Plus.

“I wish him the best of luck, and he should stay calm — he’s young and will surely recover well.”

Key Fixture Doubts Ahead

The timing of the injury raises further concerns for Barcelona, with a potential absence threatening Yamal’s availability for the highly anticipated El Clásico against Real Madrid next month — a fixture that could decide the La Liga title race.

For now, both club and country are awaiting medical scans to determine the extent of the hamstring issue, with supporters hoping the setback is not serious for one of Europe’s brightest young talents.
