The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is expected to resign his position in the coming days as he prepares to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State.
Sources within the Presidency and close associates of the minister confirmed that the resignation could happen before the end of the week, although no official announcement has been made.
Adelabu reportedly met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday to formally inform him of his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election. While he did not address journalists after the meeting, insiders said he received the President’s backing.
“He will resign, but I don’t know if it is Wednesday or later in the week. But definitely he’s going to resign,” a close ally disclosed, adding that the minister also briefed the President on his stewardship over the past two and a half years.
Following the meeting, Adelabu was said to have consulted key party figures, including former Osun State governor Adebisi Akande and former NNPC chairman Pius Akinyelure.
Adelabu, who previously contested the Oyo governorship election in 2019 under the All Progressives Congress (APC) and in 2023 under the Accord Party, has consistently signalled his intention to run again—this time on the APC platform.
The APC has fixed May 23, 2026, for its governorship primaries, with nomination forms priced at ₦50 million and sales scheduled between April 25 and May 2.
If he formally declares his candidacy, Adelabu will join other aspirants in the race, including Sarafadeen Alli and Oyedele Alao.
